Stark Edinburgh photos show front of office block ripped off to make way for hotel

Dramatic pictures show the remnants of an old Edinburgh government office ahead of its transformation into a luxury hotel.

The derelict building, situated on Drumsheugh Gardens in the capital’s west end, currently lies bare and empty in plush surroundings.

Dozens of symmetrical holes on the face of the building have been revealed after its cover was removed, giving passers-by a look into what remains.

Before its closure, the office had served as the Edinburgh base for Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs since its construction in the 1960s.

Known as Meldrum House, the building will be spruced up over the course of the year, with developers aiming to have the lavish 166-room hotel opened in 2024.

Picturing the posh development promised by Resident Hotels can seem difficult when looking at the dusty and dreary state the building currently finds itself in. Very little scaffolding remains across the six storeys, with railings in place to safeguard workers.

Metal fencing surrounds the site in an effort to deter anyone from exploring inside, with warning signs and CCTV cameras also visible.

Through the railings, onlookers can see just how bare the building has become, with almost any sign of office life wiped away. There are a few signs of litter, including bottles of water and a shoebox, adding to the curiosity of the strange scene.

William Laxton, UK CEO of development owners Mactaggart Family and Partners, said: “We are excited to bring The Resident brand to Edinburgh, a fantastic and bustling city that is the perfect location for our business model.”

“This development represents a significant move for our business as we continue to implement our ambitions for modern luxury and sustainable builds as we grow Resident Hotels across the UK.”
