Starc reaches 350 Test wickets with quadruple blow

Mitchell Starc has become just the fifth Australian bowler in the history of the game to have taken 350 Test wickets after he claimed four scalps on the opening day of the Gabba Test.

The 33-year-old reached the milestone when he had Alick Athanaze (eight) caught behind by Alex Carey. He had earlier picked up opener Tagenarine Chanderpaul (21) when he was caught at slip by Steve Smith.

Starc made it 352 when he removed Justin Greaves (six) and Kavem Hodge (71) to finish with 4-68 on day one as the West Indies reached 8-266.

"He's not underrated, but he probably doesn't get the plaudits of some of the other fast bowlers around the world," Test great Mark Waugh said of Starc on Fox Cricket.

"He's right up there. He's just a genuine wicket-taker, Mitchell Starc, in all formats."

Starc has been a master in day-night cricket. He now has 65 wickets in his 12th pink-ball Test at an average of 18.

Starc became the 27th bowler in the history of the game to reach the 350-wicket mark and he is just the third left-arm fast bowler to do so.

Only Pakistan's Wasim Akram (414) and Sri Lanka's Chaminda Vaas (355) have taken more.

"I was fortunate enough to meet Wasim about 10 years ago and chat to him," Starc reflected after the day's play.

"India were out here. I was running the drinks and he was out here commentating. I spent some time talking to him about left-arm bowling and swing bowling.

"I've had a bit of a relationship with him since. Catching up while Pakistan were here this summer was nice and chatting a few things about bowling.

"Once I started bowling (for Australia) I spent a lot of time around Mitch Johnson and learning from him about what it takes to bowl long, fast spells."

The Gabba has been the scene of some memorable moments for Starc, including his defining first delivery of the first Ashes Test in 2021-22 when he bowled England opener Rory Burns.

Starc has made his mark in an 87-Test career as a vital cog in Australia' record breaking quartet that includes pace bowlers Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood and offspinner Nathan Lyon.

The four recently became the first quartet to have all taken 250 Test wickets and all be playing in the same Test side.

"It was nice to have an impact today and go past (350)" Starc said.

"As Gaz (Nathan Lyon) is saying, there's only 150 to go.

"It is very humbling. We will all reflect on the personal stuff once we are all finished and sitting around a beer on a golf course somewhere.

"We have had a few milestones with the other two big boys going past 250 and Gaz (reaching) 500 wickets."
