Star Wars themed pizzas go down a storm at Wylam Brewery as search for Newcastle's best pizza commences

Obi-wan Pepperoni, Jabba the Nuttz and All Jedi'z on Me are among the tasty pizza portions on offer at Wylam Brewery this weekend as the search for Newcastle's best pizza commences.

Hundreds headed to the brewery in Exhibition Park this evening, eager to sample some of the culinary creations from local food vendors in this year's Slice Wars competition. And each one of them played a vital role in deciding who deserves to be crowned the best pizza in Newcastle.

Around 12 local vendors, including city favourites Scream for Pizza, Log Pizza Co and Fire & Dough, will battle it out for the title this year. But they appear to be up against some stiff competition from a whole host of much-loved vendors, including, Gingerinos, Mivesi and Square.

It's expected that vendors will serve up between 15,000 and 20,000 pizza slices over the course of the two-day contest, which will continue from midday on the Saturday, May 28, with music, beers and cocktails until late. Star Wars characters are also expected to be in attendance at the Star Wars themed event on Saturday.

In spirit of the event, a number of vendors in attendance have created their own Star Wars inspired pizzas. Slice Wars newcomers, Square, is serving up Obi-wan Pepperoni consisting of a caramelised cheese crust, three cheese blend, double pepperoni, slow cooked Square red sauce, pecorino romano, whipped ricotta flowers, Square hot honey, chilli flakes and fresh basil.

While Gingerinos is serving Jabba the Nuttz, with a white base, pistachio cream, fior di latte, grilled mortadella, fresh mozzarella and a pistachio and rosemary crumb. And Wild Fire Pizza is offering All Jedi'z on Me - a Sicilian square slice, san marzano, fior di latte, pepperoni, garlic and fresh herb butter and basil.

And that's just a small selection of what's on offer at the event. There will also be an abundance of sides, including loaded fries, sweet treats, and coffees, as well as plenty of choice for vegans and vegetarians.

Slice Wars is a family-friendly and dog-friendly event which has, and always will be, free entry, with no ticket required. Once at the event, people wishing to sample the delights on offer can purchase tokens for food items from inside Wylam Brewery.

Tokens will cost £4 each.
