Ubisoft revealed its open-world Star Wars game, Outlaws, at the Xbox Games Showcase today.
Outlaws takes place in between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, and seems to focus on the franchise's beloved underworld. We see a woman in a bar - our protagonist, named Kay Vess - get into some trouble and be chased on a speederbike into a larger open world. She's joined by an adorable little alien animal companion named Nix, too.
Not much has been revealed beyond what's in the trailer, but Ubisoft's official description of the game notes that we'll be heading to "both iconic and new" planets while attempting to "fight, steal, and outwit your way through the galaxy’s crime syndicates."
Outlaws is due to launch in 2024 across Xbox Series X and S, PS5, and PC. We'll learn more about the game at Ubisoft Forward later this week. Today's trailer was built on cinematics, so it's unclear what the gameplay showcase is going to look like. I've certainly got my fingers crossed, though.
This title was previously known simply as the Ubisoft Star Wars game. Development is being led by Massive Entertainment, the studio behind the Division games. The official site for Outlaws confirms that development will be supported by Ubisoft studios in Annecy, Bucharest, Chengdu, Milan, Montpellier, Paris, Shanghai, and Toronto. So yes, that's definitely a Ubisoft approach to production.
Even the Starfield Direct had some surprising connections to the galaxy far, far away, as the game's ship combat takes some serious inspiration from some excellent Star Wars games.
