Star Wars Jedi: Survivor cited as 'the best Star Wars game in 20 years' in reviews ahead of release

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is hours away from release, and it has already been cited as “the best Star Wars game in 20 years”. The open-world action-adventure video game set in a galaxy far, far away is coming to consoles and PC on Friday (April 28) and marks one of the most hotly anticipated games of the year.

Announced last year as the sequel to 2019 hit Jedi: Fallen Order, Jedi Survivor follows Cal Kestis, one of the last remaining Jedi after their near extinction following Order 66. Set five years after its predecessor, Cal is no longer a Padawan but a powerful Jedi Knight and continues his crusade against the Empire.

Its official synopsis reads: “Pushed to the edges of the galaxy by the Empire, Cal will find himself surrounded by threats new and familiar. As one of the last surviving Jedi Knights, Cal is driven to make a stand during the galaxy’s darkest times – but how far is he willing to go to protect himself, his crew, and the legacy of the Jedi Order?”

From California-based developer Respawn Entertainment in collaboration with Lucasfilm Games, Jedi Survivor is billed as “a third person galaxy-spanning action-adventure game” that is “narratively-driven” and includes an innovative combat system including both lightsaber and Force action. Players will rejoin Cal as he discovers new planets and familiar frontiers in the Star Wars galaxy, each with unique biomes, challenges, and enemies.

He will also master new skills, equipment, and abilities that will augment the ways players explore, fight, and roam, with larger areas to explore and more to discover off the beaten path. Jedi Survivor has received acclaim from critics ahead of its release, with particular praise given to its “spectacular” graphics and “gripping” narrative.

The game’s PlayStation 5 edition scored 86 on Metacritic, while its Xbox Series X version scored 87. In comparison, Jedi: Fallen order scored 79 on PlayStation 4 and 81 on Xbox One.

The latest foray into the Star Wars universe also achieved four perfect 100 scores on the review aggregator website, from NME, VGC, CGMagazine, and The Guardian. The Guardian cited Jedi Survivor as “the best Star Wars game in 20 years”.

It said: “It’s everything you want from a Star Wars adventure and a blockbuster video game: visually spectacular, mechanically sophisticated and riotously entertaining.”

VGC described the game as “Star Wars at its very best” and heaped praise on voice and motion capture actor Cameron Monaghan. It added that Jedi Survivor’s graphics are “visually spectacular,” the combat is “expanded and improved in every way,” and it boasts an “excellent, gripping narrative full of surprises.”

Gamespot said the game builds on its predecessor “in several meaningful ways,” including “tightening up the combat mechanics, expanding the variety of lightsaber styles, and digging into less-mainstream Star Wars lore to tell a fantastic story.”

GAMINGbible called Jedi Survivor “an exceptional sequel” that improves on “every gripe” players had with the first game “while adding countless new features in that’ll keep players engrossed for a long, long time.”

“It’ll take something really special to come out to stop Survivor being the best action/adventure game of 2023,” it added.

Several critics have reported bugs and technical issues during their playthroughs, including an inconsistent frame rate, stuttering and several instances where the game struggled to load or crashed. The game’s publisher EA has already announced patches will be released on launch day and in the weeks ahead that will include bug fixes and performance improvements.
