Donald Sutherland, star of The Hunger Games and MASH, dies aged 88

Actor Donald Sutherland, best known for appearing in The Hunger Games and MASH has died.

The Canadian actor passed away aged 88 and starred in the likes of Kelly's Heroes and Citizen X for which he won an Emmy.

Sutherland's passing was announced by his son, fellow actor Kiefer Sutherland.

Posting on X, formerly Twitter, Kiefer said: "With a heavy heart, I tell you that my father, Donald Sutherland, has passed away.

"I personally think one of the most important actors in the history of film. Never daunted by a role, good, bad or ugly.

"He loved what he did and did what he loved, and one can never ask for more than that. A life well lived."

It was reported by Deadline that Sutherland died in Miami on Thursday following a long illness.

Sutherland won a Golden Globe for the television movie Path To War and another gong along with an Emmy Award for the mini-series Citizen X.

In 2017 he received an Academy Honorary Award for his acting.

Sutherland’s most recent roles included in The Hunger Games film franchise as dictator president Coriolanus Snow and as a judge in the 2023 TV show Lawmen: Bass Reeves.

While Canadian-born, Sutherland was very proud of his Scottish ancestry.

The Hollywood star spent over a year working in Perth as a young actor, performing at Perth Repertory Theatre.

He said then that he "didn't want to go anywhere" as he was enjoying his time so much.

Sutherland also had a lasting love for a particular food he ate here."The best fish and chips come from Arbroath,” he said. “The best fish and chips I’ve ever tasted.”
