Stan Wawrinka has paid tribute to Andy Murray, praising the Scottish tennis star’s remarkable career while distancing himself from comparisons often made between the two.
Speaking on the Nothing Major Podcast, Wawrinka reflected on his own achievements and the frequent grouping of himself and Murray alongside tennis icons Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic.
Wawrinka was defeated by Lorenzo Sonego in the first round at the 2025 Australian Open. Murray, on the other hand is now retired and coached former rival Djokovic to the semi-finals, where the Serb was forced to retire against Alexander Zverev due to injury.
“I was embarrassed when people talked about the ‘big five’ or put me on the same level as Andy Murray,” Wawrinka admitted.
The Swiss star, who has three Grand Slam titles to his name, was quick to downplay suggestions that he belongs in the same category as Murray or the so-called ‘big three’.

He continued: “I’m miles away from what they have achieved, and I think it’s a little disrespectful to them and especially to Andy.
“Ive achieved more than I could have ever dreamed of in my career, but I’m so far away from what they’ve done.”
Murray, who has three major titles, two Olympic golds, and a Davis Cup victory, continues to be held in high regard by peers and fans alike.
Wawrinka’s comments are a testament to the legacy of the former world No.1, whose career is defined by his resilience and ability to compete with the greatest players of all time.
