Stan Kroenke Arsenal transfer gamble hailed after Mykhailo Mudryk blow

Arsenal completed the signing of Leandro Trossard in January after failing to land Mykhailo Mudryk. The Gunners paid £21million for the Belgian's services and the move has, so far, paid off.

Trossard was signed as competition to Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli in Mikel Arteta's attacking ranks after Emile Smith Rowe's injury concerns. The 28-year-old was the first of three new faces through the door last month, with Jakub Kiwior and Jorginho arriving late in the transfer window.

Both Trossard and Jorginho have played important roles in Arsenal's two recent wins over Aston Villa and Leicester City despite initial concerns over their arrivals. The pair arrived after Edu and Arteta failed to sign their two preferred targets in Mudryk and Moises Caicedo.

In the recent 1-0 victory over Leicester, Trossard replaced Eddie Nketiah as the Gunners' central attacker and repaid Arteta's faith in him. In the first half, a splendid right-footed strike into the top corner was harshly disallowed by VAR after Ben White was penalised for a foul on Danny Ward.

Trossard did, though, play an influential role in the game's winner with a well-timed assist for Martinelli in the opening minute of the second half. After the game, the former Brighton man's arrival in north London was praised by Danny Murphy.

Writing in his Daily Mail column, he said: “They say it’s best to strengthen from a position of strength and Arsenal are reaping the rewards of an excellent January transfer window.

“The league leaders didn’t sulk after missing out on Mykhailo Mudryk and Moises Caceido, they went straight to Plan B and brought in Leandro Trossard and Jorginho who have made significant contributions already.

“I thought Trossard was brilliant as a false nine at Leicester today. He won’t be as direct an attacking threat as Eddie Nketiah but he’s an intelligent footballer and helped Arsenal to control the game by knowing when to drop deep.”
