Stan Kroenke and Mikel Arteta sent contrasting message as Arsenal transfer approach is justified

Arsenal supporters are somewhat still split about the ownership of Stan Kroenke but feel the club are moving in the right direction in terms of ambition.

Football.London ran a week-long Big Arsenal Forum supporter poll from July 31 to August 7 collecting fans' opinions on seven different topics ahead of the 2022/23 season - which began with a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace last Friday and hundreds have had their say.

As per the results, it's clear the one area that Gunners supporters are the least content with at the moment surrounds the ownership as 66.3% - which does represent over half of the responses - are happy with Kroenke Sports & Entertainment (KSE) since they seized full control in late 2018.

Interestingly though, 78.4% of fans do think the club is ambitious and that could be down to the £400m+ spending spree across the three-and-a-quarter summer transfer windows - including the current one - since the American owners took complete control as Arsenal have spent big trying to return to the Champions League.

Just squeezing in ahead of ambition is overall happiness levels with 78.8%. Perhaps this is surprisingly high given how turbulent last season was and missing out on a top-four finish to none other than north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur, but there seems to be some optimism surrounding the club at the moment.

Meanwhile, 79.9% of supporters rate the atmosphere inside the Emirates Stadium which has improved considerably especially after fans were allowed back into the ground as home games against Spurs, Aston Villa and Manchester United, for example, highlighted the connection between the players and the fans.

Of course, this was part of Mikel Arteta's plan upon his return to Arsenal in December 2019: "We need to engage them, we need to be able to transmit with our behaviours, our intentions, what we want to bring to this football club," he said in his first press conference as head coach.

"I think that's the only way, where we give them a little bit, they give us a little bit, and suddenly we feel that connection, because when you plug these two things together, it is so powerful. I've been outside this football club and when you're outside you look at it and you say 'wow, this is massive'.

"So this is how I'm feeling. There is so much to do, I am so excited, and I think we have the right team, I have many conversations with the senior people at the club, and I feel we're on the same path. So I have a good feeling."

That is a perfect segue into 80.9% of supporters feeling emotionally connected to the current first-team squad which is probably heavily influenced by Hale End graduates such as Bukayo Saka and Emile Smith Rowe being at the forefront of this exciting project.

Now it appears that Arteta has the backing of a large number of Arsenal supporters. To be precise, 81.2% have placed their trust in the Spaniard and his coaching staff to get the best out of the squad and deliver something special within the next couple of seasons.

Lastly, but certainly not least, Arteta and technical director Edu's decision to change Arsenal's transfer approach last summer by targeting players of a similar age profile - between 22 to 25 - has been vindicated with 81.21% of supporters happy with the direction the club is going in.
