Staff at Morrisons store are set to help tackle holiday hunger

Morrisons in Erskine has announced that it will continue to support its local community by joining the national effort to help prevent holiday hunger.

Over the coming weeks the branch's Community Champion Elspeth Roxburgh will work closely with St Anne’s Early Learning and Childcare Class to help provide food that will banish holiday hunger.

A total of 497 Morrisons stores and 25 manufacturing and logistic sites will support school holiday activity programmes - arranged by local schools, community groups and HAF (the Holiday Activities and Food Programme).

In total, Morrisons will donate £100,000 of food to local holiday clubs across the country this summer.

Elspeth said: “Lynsey Cowan from a child care class at St Anne's came to me about a week ago needing help with basic food necessities for her some of her children in her class and I was more than willing to help as I didn't want the kids to not have enough food and it was one of our local schools and they needed our help.

"When Morrisons told us about the holiday hunger campaign, I was delighted as it meant I could give the children more than what I was going to give them. I made sure they got everything they asked for which included fruit, vegetables, fruit juice, cereal, pasta and milk.”

Many families struggle to feed their children during the holiday periods and this is especially the case during the current climate where the cost of living has seen many pockets being scraped to pay for necessities.

There is also an extra burden during the holiday season as parents are left covering for lunches too when their children would normally get free school meals.

Lynsey Cowen, ELC Officer at St Anne's Early Learning and Childcare Classes, said: "It is such a great community initiative to help support and care as well as keeping the environment safe and assist the families of St Anne's ELCC."

To help those in need, Morrisons already gives surplus food to local causes, such as food banks through its unsold food programme.

The in-store Food Bank Pick Up Pack scheme allows customers to purchase a bag filled with a mix of food products, which are distributed to local food banks and community organisations by in-store Community Champions supporting individuals and families.
