Tens of thousands of Elton John fans will be making plans this week to flock to the Stadium of Light as the singer visits Sunderland for the first and only time.
The Rocketman star will treat concert-goers to his biggest hits from across the decades as he makes a stop in Wearside on his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour. But visitors are being urged to brush up on the Stadium’s security policy when it comes to what they can take in with them on the day.
Most stadiums have rules around what is and isn’t allowed to be brought into the venue for a concert, and the Stadium of Light is no exception. If you’re planning to bring a bag when you come to see Elton, here’s what you need to know first.

Can I bring a bag into the Stadium?
Yes, bags can be taken inside the Stadium, but the venue has strict rules when it comes to the size of bags. A bag must be no larger than A4-sized, around the length of a sheet of paper, to be admitted into the venue.
The maximum size for bags is A4 height 297mm (11.7 inches), width 210mm (8.27 inches), depth 210mm (8.27 inches), and rucksacks of any size are banned. Concert-goers are urged to check that any bag they plan on taking to the concert does not exceed this size.
All bags will be inspected on arrival and anything that doesn’t fit into these guidelines won’t be allowed in. There are no baggage storage facilities at the Stadium where you can put your bag during the concert, so it’s important to make sure you know the rules on the day or else face missing out on the show.
Can I bring my own food and drink inside?
No - the Stadium of Light does not allow visitors to bring any of their own food and drink into the venue, so make sure you leave any bottles or snacks out of your bag or you will be made to bin them. However, there will be a range of food and drink available to buy inside once you get into the Stadium.
Flag poles or sticks for banners are also prohibited, as are professional cameras and recording equipment, and anything in your bag that could be considered dangerous such as sharp items may be confiscated. It’s also worth noting that the Stadium of Light is a cashless venue, so if you’re planning to buy some food and drink or any merchandise inside then make sure to bring a card to pay with rather than cash.
