Stack Seaburn in Sunderland plans to remain open for at least five years, with Newcastle's to close

Stack has announced it will close in Newcastle, but its Sunderland venue will remain open for at least another five years.

Newcastle's Stack box park style venue in Pilgrim Street will shut on May 2 to make way for the development of Pilgrim Place into offices.

But Sunderland' Stack, in Seaburn, has no plans to close. Instead, it will expand to offer games as part of its second phase. Unlike Newcastle's Stack in Pilgrim Street, there are no long-term plans to redevelop the plot in Seaburn.

Owners Danieli Holdings' spokesperson told ChronicleLive the Newcastle closure does not affect the Sunderland venue, which is home to a mix of bars and food outlets, and hosts live entertainment.

They added: "We have a lease in place in Sunderland up to 2027 and there are currently no long-term development plans for that site. We hope to start work on phase two at Stack Seaburn later next year which will see the introduction of competitive socialising including darts, shuffleboard, and other group gaming activities."

Stack launched in Seaburn in September 2020, during the coronavirus pandemic. Traders include Acropolis Gyros, Big Fat Indian Kitchen, and Downeys Fish and Chips.

Danieli Holdings says it will support Stack Newcastle staff in finding jobs at its other sites or help them find new jobs.

Speaking about the Newcastle Stack closure, CEO Neill Winch said: "Although this is devastating for the team, tenants, and our customers, we have always known the site was going to be temporary and that there were longer term plans for the site to be redeveloped. The Pilgrim Quarter scheme is an exciting project bringing thousands of office workers into the city centre which will no doubt have a positive effect on the local economy and city centre businesses.

This morning we had the difficult task of sharing this news with our staff and traders who are the backbone of the operation and have worked tirelessly over the past four years to bring you an exciting and unique venue."
