STACK Newcastle aims to open a new permanent home within a year.
The popular pop-up development closed in Pilgrim Street in May 2022 to make way for an office development. A plan to open another temporary pop-up this winter in the city's Stephenson Quarter, behind Newcastle Central Station, was withdrawn following objections from neighbours including Royal Mail and the Crown Plaza hotel.
But earlier this year, the team behind STACK successfully applied for a premises licence to house bars and street food vendors in Worswick Chambers, a three-storey building in Pilgrim Street that is being redeveloped.

When the licence was approved by the council's subcommittee, a hearing heard that the "proposals did not constitute a relocation of STACK," ChronicleLive reported. But the Danieli Group, which owns STACK, confirmed the plan is now for Worswick Chambers to become STACK's permanent home and flagship site.
Where STACK will open its permanent Newcastle home
Unlike the previous STACK in Newcastle, the new development will be housed inside a permanent building, Worswick Chambers, which is Grade II listed and next to the former Fire Station on Pilgrim Street. In keeping with the true STACK spirit, there will be an outdoor courtyard too.
STACK creators the Danieli Group have said that the venue will be split over three floors and include eight bars, seven street food units, two cocktail bars and a roof terrace. There will also be a central outdoor plaza area with a big screen and a stage for live performances.
When will Newcastle's new STACK open?
Initially, the development looked set to be ready for summer 2023. But STACK's owners confirmed they are now working towards a winter 2023 opening date.
Neill Winch, CEO of Danieli Group said that while it was sad news that the pop-up would no longer take place, it meant the company can forge ahead with the Worswick Chambers plan.
“We know how much people miss not having a STACK in Newcastle so we are concentrating our efforts on creating what will become a flagship site back where STACK first began,” he said.
“Work is well underway on the scheme with a view to being open in winter 2023.”
What will STACK's opening hours be?
Final opening hours may vary, but Newcastle City Council awarded permission for the Worswick Chambers development to open, serve alcohol and play music from 10am to 2am, seven days a week, the approved licence application shows.
The council's licensing sub-committee said it was “satisfied" the scheme would not negatively impact the city centre.
