McGrath, who joined the Saints from Dundalk, made 79 appearances in the stripes - bagging an impressive 20 goals from midfield.
The blow was softened slightly by the arrival of Alex Gogic, who joined up on loan from Premiership rivals Hibs until the end of the season.

In no way a like for like replacement, Jim Goodwin has looked to bring the Cyprus international to Paisley previously and he will strengthen the Buddies' midfield options.
Greg Kiltie, who has shone for the Saints in recent matches in McGrath's absence, is more likely to be tasked with replacing the Irish star's creativity and goal threat.
Jordan Jones, who arrived yesterday on a loan deal from McGrath's new club Wigan, will also help to fill the attacking void left by the Ireland international.
Last night also saw St Mirren striker Kristian Dennis depart the club.
