St Mirren striker Alex Greive seals surprise call up to New Zealand national team

Saints striker Alex Greive has received a huge call up to the New Zealand national squad.

The 22-year-old joined the Buddies on a one-and-a-half year deal earlier this month from Birkenhead United, with Jim Goodwin delighted to bolster his attacking options with the creative forward.

He has made three substitute appearances in St Mirren's last three games, all of which have been wins including last night's victory against Aberdeen, and has looked lively coming off the bench.

Now he has marked an impressive month with a first call-up to the New Zealand squad, replacing Andre de Jong who has been unable to link up as planned.

It's a significant moment for Greive, who was a part of the New Zealand Olympic Provisional squad for the Tokyo 2021 Olympic Games.

Now he'll have the opportunity to make his full debut for the senior side in their upcoming clashes with Jordan and Uzbekistan on Friday and Tuesday respectively.

That will rule him out of St Mirren's trip to Dens Park this Saturday as they look to continue their winning run against Dundee.

New Zealand head coach Danny Hay said: “Alex is someone we have monitoring for a long time and is a real talent.

“He was arguably the best player in the Northern League last year, earned his chance to go to Europe and impressed enough there to secure a big move.

“While it is disappointing that Andre can’t join us, Alex now has a chance show what he can do at this level.”
