St Mirren boss Jim Goodwin praises 'brilliant' Jak Alnwick and reveals contract hope

Jim Goodwin paid tribute to keeper Jak Alnwick for keeping the door shut at a crucial time in Leith when Hibs had Saints on the ropes.

Now he’s hoping the impressive stopper will sign on the dotted line of a bumper new contract as he targets keeping the former Newcastle and Rangers stopper in Paisley a little longer.

Alnwick made two stunning saves at the start of the second half as the Easter Road side flew out of the traps, paving the way for Connor Ronan’s sublime goal that turned out to be the winner on Saturday afternoon.

Goodwin revealed after Saturday's match that a contract offer has been on the table to Alnwick for months.

And he hopes the St Mirren number one will commit his future to the club that gave him a platform to shine after loan spells with Blackpool and Scunthorpe United.

Goodwin said: “We’re at the stage of the season where every three points is extremely valuable.

“We were very disappointed against Motherwell to get to the 92nd minute and concede so late on and drop two points.

“I thought the first 45 minutes we were the better team.

“The second half Hibs were really in the ascendancy for the first 10, 15 minutes. They came flying out the traps.

“Jak deserves a lot of credit. If he doesn’t make those saves at that particular time that game could have gotten away from us.

“He did his job brilliantly and he deserves a big pat on the back.

“There’s been an offer on the table to Jak now for the last three months.

“We’re trying to force him into signing and tie him down because he’s a very good player.

“He’s been a great signing and we’ve put a very good offer on the table for him, one that rewards him for his performances.

“Like any player coming to the end of their contract he’s entitled to scour the market and see what options are available to him. But he knows what we think of him here.

“We brought him in from the lower leagues in England and showed a lot of belief and faith in him. Hopefully he’ll reward us by signing that deal.”
