St Johnstone produce all-round "fantastic" display to sweep aside Stirling Uni

Clinical St Johnstone WFC produced a “fantastic result and performance” to sweep aside Stirling Uni on Thursday.

The Perth side was in no mood to wait around during the Scottish Women’s Premier League 2 fixture at the Riverside.

And by half-time they had carved out a four goal advantage, kick-started by an early double from Nicole Carter.

An own goal forced by Fern Newbigging would follow before defender Laura Wight then added to the growing tally.

Saints did not take their foot off the gas and made sure to increase the lead after the break thanks to further goals from Hannah Clark and Morgan Steedman.

The 6-0 finishing scoreline was, of course, massively pleasing for assistant Murdo Steven.

“It was a fantastic result and matched by a fantastic performance,” he told the PA.

“We started the game on the front foot and got rewarded for that with the early goals.

“That gave the players the platform to express themselves and their qualities.

“Our desire to get at the game was the most pleasing thing.

“We’ve been punished recently for starting games slow but we flipped that and showed hunger for more.”

The spread of scorers from front to back was also pleasing.

“Not being reliant on one player is vital,” Steven explained.

“We have quality and attacking threats throughout the squad, which showed on Thursday night.”

Saints now make the trip west to face Glasgow Women on Sunday - a team they have competed well against this term.

“Sunday is a new challenge,” Steven said. “Glasgow are a good team which is shown in their league position.

“But we go there with belief off the back of our previous two results against them. The challenge is one we look forward to.”
