St Cuthbert Wanderers gain revenge with Potts Cup victory

St Cuthbert Wanderers gained revenge on Threave Rovers on Tuesday night.

The Kirkcudbright side triumphed in the Potts Cup final just days after the Castle Douglas side denied them the League Cup.

Dan Carmichael gave Threave the lead on Tuesday night but a Scott Ballantyne double put Saints in front at the break.

And it was a lead they weren’t to lose, making up for the double disappointment of the previous week.

St Cuthbert Wanderers suffered a double disappointment in the space of just 48 hours.

Last Wednesday, their hopes of promotion were killed off as they lost to Darvel.

And just days later Threave beat them 4-1 in the League Cup.

Saints’ promotion hopes were already slim after they lost 7-0 to East champions Tranent in their first game.

And they were dealt a further blow when Allan Mackenzie gave West winners Darvel an early lead at St Mary’s Park.

Jordan Kirkpatrick doubled the lead before the break before Russell Williamson reduced the deficit with a penalty.

However, former Queen of the South midfielder Ian McShane scored late on to give Darvel the win.

Saints boss, Jordan Williamson, said: “Against Tranent it felt like we left ourselves exposed

“Going into Wednesday we were the complete opposite. We shut ourselves down as we knew we would be heavy legged after Tranent and had the cup final to come.

“With the plastic pitch we knew Darvel, with the players they had, would be in control so we didn’t want to let ourselves be easily breached.

“I thought all the players were unbelievable. They made it really hard for Darvel to break us down and it was gutting to concede in the last minute as they felt they deserved the 2-1 scoreline.”

Saints’ misery continued on Friday night as they lost to Threave in the League Cup final at Creetown.

A Phil Middlemiss’ cross was deflected into the Saints net but Williamson equalised shortly before half-time.

However, second half goals from Dan Carmichael, Scott Milligan and Alex Henderson saw Threave claim the trophy.

Williamson said: “You always want to win a cup final against your rivals. We thought we were OK in the first half, we grew into the game slowly. We fell behind but when we went in at half-time I thought the tide had turned.

“The second half was in similar vein but Jake Gemmell made an error that they were able to pounce on. At 2-1 the players were deflated - they had got a foothold in the game and then to concede a slack goal, you could tell in the players that it was a sucker punch.

“From there we had to go for it, there’s no point sitting doing nothing when it’s a cup final. You might as well lose 4-1 than 2-1. We threw a couple of bodies forward and there were still opportunities.

“If we’d got that goal back, whether it be 2-1 or 3-1, you never know how the game will then end up. Fair play to Threave, they defended well, caught us on the counter those two times and put the game to bed.”
