Sri Lanka has been hit by heavy rains, leading to widespread flooding in many parts of the country. As a result, schools in the capital city of Colombo and its suburbs have been closed to ensure the safety of students and staff.

Over the weekend, the heavy downpours caused significant damage, including flooding of homes, fields, and roads. Tragically, three individuals lost their lives due to drowning, and approximately 134,000 people have been affected by the floods, according to the Disaster Management Centre of Sri Lanka.

The impact of the rains and floods has been substantial, with 240 houses damaged and nearly 7,000 individuals evacuated from their homes. As a precautionary measure, authorities have taken steps to cut off electricity in certain areas.

In response to the crisis, the Sri Lankan Navy and army have mobilized troops to assist in rescue operations and provide essential supplies such as food to those affected by the flooding.

Television broadcasts have shown the extent of the flooding in the suburbs of Colombo, with water levels rising to the roofs of buildings in some areas. The scenes depict the severity of the situation and the challenges faced by residents in the affected regions.

This recent bout of severe weather is part of a larger pattern that Sri Lanka has been experiencing since May, primarily due to heavy monsoon rains. In June alone, 16 individuals lost their lives as a result of floods and mudslides, underscoring the ongoing threat posed by the inclement weather conditions.
