Colombo: The situation in Sri Lanka, which is facing a serious economic crisis, is getting worse. Reports are coming that protesters have surrounded the residence of the country’s President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
It is being said that Rajapaksa has run away from home. Some time ago, when former Sri Lankan Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa resigned in the midst of heavy uproar, he had to run away from home with his family to avoid arson and violent protesters.
According to Sri Lankan newspaper Daily Mirror, the protesters have entered the President’s residence and occupied it. Video footage from local TV channel Newsfirst showed protesters holding a Sri Lankan flag and helmets entering the President’s residence.
In a video shared on Twitter, hundreds of protesters are seen shouting slogans inside Sri Lanka’s President house.
Reuters quoted an eyewitness as saying that police fired in the air to stop the angry mob that surrounded the President house but could not stop them. “Thousands of protesters stormed the main entrance of the residence, breaking the barricades, and police were seen retreating from the area,” the report said.
Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has called an emergency meeting of party leaders to discuss the situation. He is also requesting the Speaker to convene Parliament.
Protesters have been demanding Rajapaksa’s resignation since March.
