Squid Game Season 2 Netflix release date teased by series creator - and fans might have a long wait

Squid Game season 2 won’t be set for release until at least 2023 or 2024, the show’s creator has revealed.

Fans of the Netflix sensation, which quickly became the platform’s most-watched show, have been eager to learn about what lies in store for the future of the series.

Speaking to Vanity Fair, Squid Game showrunner Hwang Dong-hyuk teased that fans might be waiting for quite some time - as he only has three pages of ideas for the latest script.

However, Dong-hyuk did suggest that the characters would certainly be tested through a series of games just like they did in season one.

“Humanity is going to be put to a test through those games once again,” the director told the publication. “I want to ask the question, ‘Is true solidarity between humans possible?’

Dony-hyuk’s statement comes as the showrunner engages in final talks with the streaming giant about season 2.

At the start of 2022, Netflix confirmed that they’d renewed Squid Game for a second series. At the time Netflix CCO Ted Sarandos said: “the ‘Squid Game’ universe has just begun.”

Featuring stars Lee Jung-jae, Park Hae-soo, Jung Hoyeon and Oh Yeong-su, the immensely popular show followed the story of 456 desperate people vying to win 45.6 billion South Korean won. What ensues is a bloodied, high-stakes competition that involves a series of simple children’s games.

Squid Game - which was first imagined by Dong-hyuk in 2008 - broke records when it was watched by 111 million viewers within the first 28 days it was available on Netflix. It has since been revealed that the show has garnered over 2.1 billion watch hours from worldwide viewers.

The show went on to receive three SAG awards and two Critics Choice awards. For his role as the deceptive yet frail “Player 001” the 77-year-old actor, Yeong-su received a Golden Globe.
