BALTIMORE — A squeegee worker was shot and killed Saturday in West Baltimore’s Mondawmin neighborhood. Police said there was no evidence the shooting involved an interaction with a motorist.
The 18-year-old victim’s death came less than four weeks after a deadly confrontation in which a man approached a group of squeegee workers swinging a baseball bat at the intersection of Light and Conway streets. The man died from gunshot wounds after one of the youths opened fire.
On Saturday, police said Western District patrol officers responded about 11:10 a.m. to the 1800 block of Gwynns Falls Parkway and found the victim with gunshot wounds. He later died at a hospital.
Police said Saturday afternoon that they were gathering evidence and had no information about the victim. Early in the evening, police spokeswoman Lindsey Eldridge said in an email that “the victim killed today is a squeegee worker. At this time we do not have information to believe this incident is related to him squeegeeing or any interaction with a motorist.”

The July 7 shooting set off a public debate about what to do about the teens and young men, many from low-income neighborhoods, who offer to squeegee windshields at high-traffic intersections in town. Many need the immediate cash, a benefit not usually offered through job training programs and traditional employment. But some business and political leaders consider them a nuisance at best and a public safety threat at worst.
The shooting of the squeegee worker was just the latest of a violent weekend.
Two other people died and five were injured in shootings and an aggravated assault on Friday night and Saturday in Baltimore.
On Saturday night, Northern District officers, responding to a call, were told a man had tried to take a security officer’s weapon in the 2000 block of Maryland Avenue. The security officer gained control of the weapon and fired at the man, who walked to a local hospital for treatment of a graze wound to the abdomen, police said. Police have the man in custody.
Also on Saturday night, police were dispatched to the 3800 block of Mary Avenue and found a 54 year-old man who had been shot in the foot. Police said the victim refused to be transported to an area hospital.
A 47-year-old man is in stable condition at a hospital after he was shot around 11:10 p.m. Saturday in the 2500 block of Druid Hill Avenue in Penn North.
Earlier, a 58-year-old man was shot about 8:30 a.m. Saturday in the Penn North neighborhood, police said. Western District patrol officers responded to the 1600 block of West North Avenue for a shooting.
Police canvased the area and found the victim in the 1800 block of North Mount Street with apparent gunshot wounds, according to a news release. He was taken by ambulance to a hospital. Police didn’t indicate his condition.

Also Saturday morning, a 19-year-old man died and a 21-year-old man was injured in a shooting near the Oliver neighborhood.
Eastern District patrol officers responded approximately 12:30 a.m. to the 1700 block of East Oliver Street for a reported shooting, according to a news release.
Officers found the victims suffering from gunshot wounds. Both were taken by ambulance to a hospital, where the 19-year-old died. Police didn’t indicate the condition of the 21-year-old.

On Friday night, a man died after an aggravated assault in East Baltimore’s Dunbar Broadway neighborhood.
Patrol officers in the Southeast District were summoned about 8:40 p.m. to the 1300 block of East Fayette Street for an aggravated assault. There, police found a 59-year-old man unconscious and unresponsive.
He was taken to Johns Hopkins Hospital where he died a short time later, police said.
An unknown juvenile male dressed in all black repeatedly assaulted the man before fleeing the scene, according to preliminary investigations. Anyone with information is asked to call 410-396-2100.
The overnight shootings follow a quadruple shooting that left two people dead Friday morning in West Baltimore.
