Squash debate goes viral: What do you call this drink?

It is a simple enough question - what do you call this drink? But it turned out to be a more divisive question than anyone could have predicted.

A picture was put up on twitter of a Robinsons Real Fruit double strength orange drink by Absolute Radio DJ Andy Bush. People were asked: What is the correct name for this drink.

For many people, the automatic answer was 'squash'. But not everyone agreed - this being twitter after all, with Specsavers, deliveroo and the NHS all getting involved in the discussion.

Other alternatives were 'mix-up juice' 'cordial' 'dilute' 'diluting juice', 'fruit mousse' and even 'pop'. The debate ended up with #squash as one of the top trending topics in the UK.

Top-level debate

Specsavers tweeted an image of a drink bottle and handily circled the label which said 'Multivitamin Squash'. The added in the tweet: "Just stopping by with a quick, free eye test for half the nation."

While the PSA World Tour twitter account for the game squash, tweeted a gif of a man putting his head in his hands with the message: "When you see squash is trending in the UK... and then find out it's about the drink."

The NHS replied: "Our website refers to it as squash - no reference to diluting juice or cordial. So that's that then."

Deliveroo said: "Squash. I will die on this hill."

Twitter users have their say

Twitter user Dear Aunty wrote: "Juice is what you get when you squeeze a fruit. Squash is what you get when you buy concentrated juice (undrinkable until its mixed with water) to dilute."

Waifs & Strays wrote: "'I’ll have a glass of diluting juice please mum…' no one says this!?! It’s squash. Cordial is similar but has no suspended bits and tends to be more concentrated."

Curtis Moldrich said it was "The fruit mousse", John Sproul wrote: "Squash, but wife says pop."

Davey Beardsley wrote: "It's dilutey orange juice." Jo Aaron Lilford wrote:" Squash. Or cordial if you're posh. I'd never heard of diluting juice before this actual tweet."
