A group of more than 100 loyal Leeds United supporters have helped raised over £50,000 for mental health charities in honour of Gary Speed.
With this year marking 11 years since his passing, United fan group 'The Square Ball' began the walk from Speed’s first playing field in North Wales, back to Elland Road, beginning three days ago. Spurred on by members of the Whites current playing squad, including club captain Liam Cooper, the 92 mile trek began in Flintshire with the group hailed for their efforts along the way.
Passing through Warrington, Ellesmere Port, Frodsham, Altrincham, Manchester, Oldham, Marsden, Huddersfield, the group finally arrived at Elland Road earlier this afternoon, with the club also opening up the Gary Speed suite to feed and water the now exhausted walkers.
Sharing updates along the way, organiser Michael Normanton of The Square Ball has since amplified the group's decision to carry on moving forward by remembering the former United midfielder in such a way.
"Even 10 years later, Gary's passing is something we all struggle to come to terms with, so when the 10th anniversary came around in November, we decided it was an occasion we shouldn't leave unmarked.
"The end of this season seems a perfect time to celebrate his life as it coincides with the 30 year anniversary of the title win Gary contributed so much to. Whether in his usual midfield role, filling in at left-back or up front in place of Lee Chapman, Gary was brilliant at all of it.
“He was talented, handsome and loved by thousands. If mental heath can be an issue for someone as brilliant as that then it's an issue for all of us."
With the total now at over £50,000, donations can still be made here via the fundraising link.
