There are few squad numbers left for Anthony Gordon to choose once he completes his big-money move to Newcastle United. ChronicleLive understands all formalities are complete, with official club confirmation expected soon.
Gordon arrives on Tyneside as the Magpies’ second most expensive player ever. Despite never earning a senior international cap, his transfer fee is also the 10th highest paid for an Englishman.
As he arrives in a January transfer window, his options for shirt numbers are limited. All digits from one to 14 are taken following Alexander Isak’s (14) record-breaking move last August.

The number 10 jersey he wore at Everton is occupied by Toon maverick Allan Saint-Maximin. Ironically, the Frenchman will be directly competing with Gordon for a place in Eddie Howe’s side.
Before the current campaign, the Newcastle new boy donned 24 on the back of his shirt. However, that number is taken by 2022-23 top goalscorer Miguel Almiron.
Both 15 and 16 are available, with Jeff Hendrick vacating the latter following his loan move to Reading. Jamal Lewis was 15 but he switched to 12 at the start of the season.
Federico Fernandez left the club on deadline day last summer, freeing up number 18 in the process. Astonishingly, 25 has been unoccupied for almost five years, with Jamie Sterry its last custodian.
