Spotting certain tiny insects in your home could point to pricey problem

Spotting insects around your home is not uncommon but noticing a little silver beastie lurking could lead to a very expensive problem if you are not careful.

Silverfish are strange, silver and shiny insects shaped a little like a teardrop. The tiny pests are harmless to humans and do not cause damage to your home themselves.

However, it is not the insects themselves that could result in trouble but instead what their presence may suggest. Finding silverfish in your property could mean you have a damp problem, potentially costing a small fortune if left unchecked.

The insects love damp conditions, thriving around water and moisture, reports the Mirror.

It means if spot one creeping along your skirting board or lurking in the gaps around your windows, there is a high chance of damp in parts of your home.

Leaving damp unchecked can lead to a huge range of issues that can often be expensive. Damp can cause bricks to crack, joists to rot and plaster to decay as mould spread around you home. Mould can not only destroy the material of your home but wreak havoc when it comes to air quality too.

Damp may be the result of a number of different things such as leaky drainpipes, condensation or simply poor ventilation - especially around bathrooms and kitchens where there is often a lot of water in the air.

It can sometimes be difficult to find the root of the problem, but spotting Silverfish is a good indicator that some digging needs to be done and the issue tackled quickly.
