Sports writer Celtic vs Rangers predictions: Ibrox heroics to take toll

Celtic host Rangers in the Scottish Premiership on Sunday.

Brendan Rodgers' side sit 16 points clear at the top of the league table going into the derby contest at Celtic Park.

Rangers head into the match off the back of sealing progression into the quarter-final of the Europa League with a penalty shoot-out win over Fenerbahce on Thursday night.

Celtic, meanwhile, won 2-0 against Hibernian in the Scottish Cup quarter-final last time out.

Here, Herald and Times sports writers predict this Sunday's match between Celtic and Rangers...

Matthew Lindsay - Celtic 3 Rangers 1

Celtic may be 16 points clear of Rangers in the William Hill Premiership with nine games remaining and might be certainties to lift a fourth consecutive Scottish title this season.

But Brendan Rodgers' men have a big point to prove at Parkhead tomorrow afternoon.

They were, even though they won on penalties, far from their best in the Premier Sports Cup final at Hampden in December. And they were well beaten at Ibrox at the start of January.

They will, then, be determined to give the fans who criticised them a performance and result to cheer.

Rangers did brilliantly to beat Fenerbahce in Govan on Thursday night and reach the Europa League quarter-finals. But that physically and mentally draining outing will have taken a toll on James Tavernier and his team mates.

I expect Celtic to prevail and prevail comfortably.

Jonny McFarlane - Celtic 3 Rangers 2

Celtic come in to the Old Firm derby still bristling over how easily they were taken apart at Ibrox in January and desperate to make amends. The title is long gone for Rangers but any sort of result here would still be a good one. This is especially apposite after their heroics in slaying Jose Mourinho's Fenerbahce, a game where several key players looked utterly spent by the finale. Those fraught, emotional 120 minutes will have taken a toll, while Brendan Rodgers' men will be fresh as well as motivated and that will be the difference.

Matthew Johnston - Celtic 4 Rangers 1

There's no chance Brendan Rodgers or any of his players would ever acknowledge it, but the 49ers takeover news will have them champing at the bit to once again serve a reminder to Rangers of the gap between the clubs. Added to that the fact that Philippe Clement caught the Scottish champions cold in the New Year encounter, the one major blemish on Celtic's campaign, and I think we may see something special from the hosts at Parkhead.

Rangers will be shattered coming off the back of 120 minutes plus penalties against a Fenerbahce side who frankly ran them ragged, and though there will be no shortage of chest-beating and teeth-gnashing in the dressing room from a bonafide club legend, if Barry Ferguson sticks with three at the back it may be open season for Jota and Nicolas Kuhn down the flanks. Frankly think this could be a reality check - though it may not be the worst thing for Rangers in the long-term.

Ewan Paton - Celtic 2 Rangers 1

Brendan Rodgers’ side are the best in Scotland, and I fully expect them to hammer that sentiment home this weekend.

For as much as Rangers go into the game on a massive high having progressed to the quarter-finals of the Europa League, the factors of extra-time and penalties must be considered too.

Above all else, Celtic have better players and have been at the top of their game essentially all season.

Both league matches have finished in comfortable home victories for either side. However, I see this being more of a repeat of the League Cup final with a tight game, separated by either a moment of quality of a mistake.

David Irvine - Celtic 3 Rangers 1

A 16-point lead in the league, freshness from a full week in preparation and with the defeat to Rangers at Ibrox in the memory from the last meeting in January - everything points to a Celtic victory this Sunday.

Rangers, under Barry Ferguson, have achieved impressive results in Europe but there are still question marks over domestic form before a daunting trip to Celtic Park.

With visiting fans back for the first time, Rangers will be desperate to give them something to cheer, but I'd be surprised if it is anything more than a consolation goal this weekend.

Celtic have been rampant in the Scottish Premiership and don't look like stopping until the league title is wrapped up, this is set up to be just another victory on a seemingly inevitable title procession for Brendan Rodgers and his charges.
