The Star Soccer daily newspaper closed on Wednesday after three decades of sports coverage.

The news was first broken on Tuesday by Bouranij Abbjom Rattanavichien, a well-known columnist with Siam Sport Syndicate, who posted on Facebook that the tabloid would no longer exist.

The newspaper on Wednesday confirmed its closure via Facebook, with Oran Chuebang, managing director of Siam Sport Syndicate, saying it had been merged into the company’s Siamsport Daily.

Star Soccer was founded in June 1992 by Rawi Lothong, the company’s board chairman, to cover the ninth European Football Championship, then hosted by Sweden. Its first issue was published the following month.

It was the first sports newspaper in the country to be published in the more compact tabloid format.
