Sports Capital Grants bonanza gives League of Ireland clubs a welcome financial boost

A number of League of Ireland clubs were quids in today after a Sports Capital Grants bonanza.

The Government has dished out over €1.5 million in funding to Premier and First Division clubs towards improving grounds, facilities and equipment.

Bohemians and DCU were awarded the maximum allocation of €300,000 for the development of an all-weather pitch at their DCU training base.

Cobh Ramblers were also awarded €300,000 for the general upgrade of club facilities and equipment.

Bray Wanderers have the green light to install an artificial pitch at the Carlisle Grounds after a €280,700 allocation.

This could be an additional pitch for training, although the Wicklow club has in the past strongly considered replacing the existing grass surface.

Athlone Town landed a €250,674 windfall for dressing room and toilet upgrade work, as well as a fitness suite.

Sligo Rovers will install new floodlights and carry out general upgrades at the Showgrounds after a €211,674 grant.

The Bit O’Red last year published its plans for a radical overhaul of the ground, with the hope of turning it into a 6,000-seater UEFA Category 3 venue by 2028.

FInn Harps have received €196,263 for pitch and floodlight upgrades for their women’s and academy teams.

Drogheda United will work towards turning their Marley’s Lane facility into a training centre for all its teams after a grant of €150,000.

Longford Town will get €46,048 towards new academy equipment.

The AUL centre in Dublin - where Shelbourne train - has received a grant of €168,648 towards pitch and clubhouse upgrade work.

The Roadstone Group Social Club, where Shamrock Rovers train, will install LED Floodlights on its grass pitches after landing €149,448.

And one of the three grants dished out to the FAI is €247,372 for a national goal post upgrade scheme.

The governing body also got €26,198 towards Blind football improvements and €26,658 for underage international equipment.
