Riyad Mahrez, City’s most prolific goal scorer, bundled Kevin De Bruyne’s parried shot over the line, eventually given after a lengthy VAR check.
Silva then hit a stunning half-volley after a corner was initially cleared after Sporting had cleared a corner before Mahrez teed Phil Foden up from the byline. Raheem Sterling then did the same for Silva to hit the fourth before the interval.
After the break, having seen Silva’s header for a hat-trick ruled out, Sterling scored the 150th goal of his club career with a stunning 25-yard effort to seal an emphatic win.
