Spoils shared between Rangers and Celtic as Glasgow City go top of SWPL

Rangers and Celtic played out a 1-1 draw in Sunday’s Glasgow derby at Broadwood — a result that ultimately did little to aid either side’s ambitions in a fiercely contested SWPL title race.

Rangers led the contest for over an hour thanks to Kirsty Howat’s superb early strike, but substitute Amy Gallacher salvaged a point for the visitors in the 71st minute, preventing Rangers from returning to the top of the table.

It was a bruising outcome for Jo Potter’s side, who dominated large spells of the match but couldn’t convert their pressure into the second goal that would have cemented victory.

Instead, the draw extends the Light Blues’ unbeaten run since the league split, but leaves them trailing both Glasgow City — who they face in midweek — and league leaders Hibernian by a solitary point.

The results elsewhere added further intrigue to the title race, with Glasgow City returning to the top of the SWPL following a dominant 4-0 victory over Motherwell.

It took almost half an hour for the 16-time champions to break the deadlock through a header from Brenna Lovera.

Lovera then doubled the lead with a powerful strike before quickly turning provider, setting up Katie Lockwood to fire home the third.

Lockwood added a second after the break to seal a commanding win for City, who now find themselves in pole position with seven games remaining.

Meanwhile, Hibernian’s challenge faltered as they suffered a surprising 2-1 defeat at home to Hearts, leaving them a point behind Glasgow City and now just a point ahead of Rangers.

With the title race tightening, every match from here on in will be crucial for all three sides.
