Earlier this week it was revealed that fines for fare-dodging passengers caught without tickets on Metrolink trams could be increased under a 'review' of the network's byelaws.
Under the current rule, the charge for a standard fare notice issued during an inspection is £100 and must be paid within 21 days. Fines reduce to £50 if settled within two weeks, the Manchester Evening News previously reported .
But after the government announced the penalty for evading rail fares in England will increase from £20 to £100 next year, Metrolink bosses have confirmed they are looking at 'potentially increasing' the £100 standard fare.
No decision has been made as yet by Transport For Greater Manchester (TFGM), with Metrolink bosses saying the £100 standard rate fine has been in place for ‘some time’.
Reader George Wilson reacted strongly to the possible increase, saying: "Fines are ridiculous, if people can’t afford the fare as it is, what makes you think they can pay the fine!?
"Fines are designed to punish the poor, that's it."
Justin Swainson said: “How about making fares affordable! The tram system is expensive.”
Others said more staff should be put on the trams to carry spot checks.
Ashley Leadbeater, posted: "If they have people checking tickets before we board, there would be a lot less ticket dodgers! Also wouldn't be a waste of money buying one to never get checked!"
Some called for the fines to be doubled, with Mike Wardle responding: "Can double for all I care, just pay the fare and no issues. However no point if they don't enforce it."
Others reacted similarly, with Lrc Cooley saying: "About time. The current fine is too low and given how infrequently anyone checks tickets, it's often cheaper to just pay a fine now and again than it is to pay for tickets.
"Personally I'm sick of paying and then not being able to get a seat or travel in peace because of all the fare dodgers taking up seats and causing trouble. More checks and tougher fines that are actually enforced are what's needed."
