Spirit Box questions and phrases you can use in Phasmophobia

Phasmophobia spirit box questions.

Trying to figure out which Phasmophobia Spirit Box questions to use? If you're looking for important evidence while tracking a ghost, you're going to need to know how to commune with them.

Not all ghosts will communicate via Spirit Box, but if you ask the right questions you can narrow down the list. Some troubled souls answer with unique interactions, while others may be more keen on responding to specific questions. There's also a whole tier system for the Spirit Box, impacting voice input and feedback.

Chatting with demons and the dead gets a little complicated, but it's not so bad once you're on friendlier terms with the haunted voice box.

How to use the Phasmophobia Spirit Box

The Spirit Box is one of several tools in Phasmophobia's ghost-hunting kit that counts as unique evidence. Some ghosts are pretty damn chatty. Others may give you the cold shoulder even if the Spirit Box is one of their three main evidence options, but that can also be due to user error (I leave a lot of lights on).

Before you go yelling at demons in the night, make sure you've got a basic understanding of how the Spirit Box works in Phasmophobia:

  • In the truck, check who the ghost responds to. Options include:
    • People who are alone
    • Everyone
    • We don't know
  • Locate the ghost room—you must be in there to ask questions
  • Turn off all lights in the ghost room (including lamps)
  • Turn the Spirit Box on (you should hear static noise)

What to do if the Spirit Box is not working

If the Spirit Box isn't working, try checking your Phasmophobia voice input settings by navigating to the Options menu, then Audio, and finally Microphone. The assigned device may change between updates, so make sure Phasmophobia is using the correct input.

Troubleshooting the Phasmophobia Voice Input

  • Under Options, select the correct Voice Recognition Mode
  • Text lists all questions in a new menu when turning the Spirit Box on
  • Voice relies strictly on a player's voice for questions, it can be finnicky
  • System Voice relies on Windows and is a little more forgiving, but it may mishear your questions more often

Phasmophobia Spirit Box tiers and upgrades

There are three Spirit Box tiers, each improving on its effectiveness and how it relays ghost feedback. Note that the range on the tier 1 Spirit Box is so short that even if you're in the correct room, you may not get an answer unless you're close enough to the ghost itself. The response rate is also lower at tier 1, so you may need to spend more time asking questions compared to the tier 3 voice box.

It doesn't matter which question you ask a ghost, getting any Spirit Box response in Phasmophobia counts as evidence. Usually, the types of questions don't help identify the ghost type, but keep in mind that some ghosts grow more agitated by yapping.

Several years back, players datamined Phasmophobia and turned up a list of valid Spirit Box questions. It's a pretty long list, and many questions are somewhat repetitive, so it's easy to stick to the shorter list of questions that have been popular since Phasmo's original launch. A few of these (like location questions) are also handy for the Ouija Board.

Here's a list of questions (and some demands) that you're likely to get an answer to through the Spirit Box.

  • How old are you?
  • Are you friendly?
  • Where are you?
  • What do you want?
  • Why are you here?
  • Are you angry?
  • Should we leave?
  • What are you?
  • Are you here?
  • Are you with us?
  • Can you show yourself?
  • Can you give us a sign?
  • Can you talk?
  • Can you speak to us?
  • Open/close a door
  • Turn on/off the light
  • Show us a sign
  • Show yourself

Phasmophobia ghosts and their Spirit Box evidence

There are 11 ghost types in Phasmophobia that use the Spirit Box for evidence, but some have unique responses or behavior patterns you'll want to remember.

Ghost types with unique Spirit Box evidence

  • A Moroi will curse a player (causing bigger sanity losses) for asking questions through a Spirit Box
  • A Deogen can give a unique response on the Spirit Box that sounds like deep, aggressive breathing

Tips for other ghosts relying on Spirit Box evidence

  • Yokai get angry if you're nearby and talking, with or without the Spirit Box. It makes getting evidence for them harder since they're more likely to attack while trying to communicate
  • The Twins will only speak to players at their physical location
  • The Mimic uses the Spirit Box as evidence, so don't forget to look for Ghost Orbs, Freezing temps, or Ultraviolet clues
