Spirit Airlines Introduces New Premium Ticket Bundles

Passengers try to rebook their tickets from cancelled United Airlines flights in San Juan

Spirit Airlines has announced plans to revamp its ticket-selling strategy by introducing new ticket bundles that include perks previously offered as add-ons, such as free snacks and checked bags. The airline aims to cater to a wider range of passengers by offering four ticket bundles, ranging from basic services to more premium offerings resembling business-class amenities.

Among the new perks included in the premium bundles are priority check-in and boarding for premium passengers, Spirit credit card holders, and Gold-level frequent fliers. These changes are set to take effect on August 16, with the new bundles available for flights starting August 27.

This shift in strategy comes as Spirit Airlines, known for its ultra-low-cost model, faces financial challenges exacerbated by rising costs and thin profit margins. The airline reported a significant loss in the first quarter of 2024, following the fallout from a failed merger with JetBlue.

Low-cost carriers like Spirit and Frontier have traditionally relied on offering budget-friendly fares with optional add-ons to generate revenue. However, the industry trend towards premium services has prompted Spirit to introduce these new perks to attract premium passengers and boost revenue.

Other airlines in the industry, such as Southwest and Alaska Airlines, are also adapting to meet the demand for premium options. Southwest is changing its open seating policy to allow passengers to pre-select seats, while Alaska Airlines is retrofitting its fleet to add more first-class and premium economy seats.

As the airline industry continues to evolve, low-cost carriers are exploring new strategies to remain competitive and enhance their revenue streams. Spirit Airlines' decision to offer premium bundles signals a shift towards catering to a broader range of passengers and adapting to changing market dynamics.
