Spiky Tottenham boss Antonio Conte calls for Daniel Levy and Fabio Paratici to explain ‘strategy and vision’

Antonio Conte has bemoaned English football's "bad habit" of relying on managers to be the public faces of clubs, and says it would be "much better" if Daniel Levy or Fabio Paratici explained Tottenham's "strategy and vision" to the media.

Spurs chairman Levy rarely does interviews, preferring to address fans through an annual message ahead of the final home game of each season.

Managing director Paratici is also yet to take questions from English media - aside from a press conference after Conte's appointment in November 2021 while the head coach was still awaiting a work permit.

When Conte worked under Paratici at Juventus, the latter would frequently speak to the Italian press ahead of matches and the manager said it would be beneficial if English football adopted a similar model to Italy.

"In England, there is a bad habit that there is only the coach to speak and to explain," Conte said. "I have never seen the medical department come here to explain why this player is having difficulty to recover.

"It's the same also [in that] I have never seen the club or sporting director come here to explain the strategy and vision of the club. In Italy, for example, before every game there is a person from the club who has to go before the media and answer every question.

"For us, it could be much, much better. Because otherwise, every time there is only one face to explain a situation which I think is better for the club to explain. But this is a habit and I respect this habit."

In a tetchy appearance ahead of Thursday's Premier League game at Manchester City, Conte said he "did not want to spend every press conference explaining the situation" at the club, and suggested there would be fewer "misunderstandings" if Levy or Paratici occasionally stepped in.

"In Italy, it's different, the person from the club during the game week speaks and explains many situations. If only the coach speaks there are sometimes misunderstandings," Conte continued.

"I think it would be good to have the club present in the media and to speak. Not every week but at least every 15 days or once a month.

"In this way it could also be more simple for you [the media] to understand the situation. And not only have one face and always the same face. Believe me it's difficult because everything I tell you could be a criticism or negative, and this is not the truth."

He added: "I am not going to ask [the club] anything. This type of situation is good for every club: 'don't go into the media'. In this type of situation, it's a risk to speak always to explain this type of situation. The coach has to stay silent and accept the situation."

Conte expects to have Rodrigo Bentancur available for the first time since before the World Cup break for Thursday's trip to City after the midfielder recovered from an adductor strain.
