Shameik Moore, the lead voice actor in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, expressed disappointment after the film did not win the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature at the 2024 Oscars. The animated sequel was nominated alongside Elemental, Nimona, Robot Dreams, and the winning film, The Boy and the Heron.
Following the awards ceremony, Moore took to social media to share his feelings, calling the outcome a 'robbery.' Despite feeling like a 'sore loser,' Moore acknowledged the impact of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse on audiences, stating that the film has touched many lives.
Christopher Miller, one of the film's writers, also reacted to the loss, expressing pride in the team's work and recognizing the cultural significance of their creation. Miller mentioned that if they had to lose, it was an honor to lose to Hayao Miyazaki, the acclaimed director behind The Boy and the Heron.
Miyazaki, known for his work with Studio Ghibli, including the award-winning Spirited Away, was not present at the ceremony to accept the award in person.
Despite the disappointment, Moore and the Spider-Verse team maintained a positive and professional attitude in their responses to the outcome. Moore emphasized his youth and fighting spirit, expressing excitement for future projects.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, which featured a star-studded cast including Hailee Steinfeld, Brian Tyree Henry, and Oscar Isaac, was a commercial success. The film's ending teased a sequel, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, hinting at more adventures to come.
