Spice Up Your Wardrobe: 5 times the Spice Girls predicted the fashion future

It's been over 20 years since Emma Bunton, Melanie Chisholm, Geri Halliwell, Melanie Brown and Victoria Beckham (née Adams) formed the Spice Girls.

Two decades later and the iconic '90s band has just announced a six-date tour, which will see the girl power gang (minus Victoria Beckham) hit the road for a second reunion tour.

We are, of course, undeniably excited to hear them blast out their biggest hits again, but we're bursting with anticipation to see what kind of 'girl power' ensembles will be packed onto the Spice Bus.

Too often remembered simply for Geri's Union Jack dress and Posh's array of LBDs, the Spice Girls were sartorial libertarians, who preached dresses over jeans and suit jackets with triangle bikinis (because why not?). They single-handedly put lime green crop tops on the fashion map... and were all for you pairing them with leopard print flares.

Here are five fashion moments that prove they were totally ahead of their time:

1. All white on the night

Spice Girls 'Spice World' Los Angeles Premiere in 1998

The full white tuxedo has long been many a fashionista's holy grail. The queens of Spice nailed the look back in 1998, when they wore matching white suits for the premiere of Spice World in LA.

Double-breasted wool blazer, £308, Racil. Shop it here.

2. Cheongsams and platforms

Let's not forget the time Geri killed it in a red cheongsam dress and matching red platforms on the British Royal tour of Africa in 1997.

Hats off also to Mel B who managed to pull off a full red and green snakeskin ensemble without looking too deranged, and Victoria, who tackled the full bronze suit and bra look with aplomb.

Embellished satin dress, £355, Alexa Chung. Shop it here

3. Tiny Sunglasses

Geri Haliwell and Emma Bunton in Spice World the movie, 1997

Geri rocked a pair of teeny weeny wire-rimmed sunnies in Spice World the movie while Baby Spice sported AW17's favourite accessory, the beret.

Tiny sunglasses have in fact been a huge hit in 2018, so once again Geri was well ahead of her time.

4. Serious sass in a slip dress

Posh and Baby attend the VH1/Vogue Fashion Awards on October 20, 2000

Long before we all started wearing our nighties over a white t-shirt, Posh Spice wore a neon pink satin slip dress to the 2000 Vogue Fashion Awards. Paired with matching neon strappy heels (and blusher?), it was all just very zig-a-zig-aah.

5 things you need to see at the Spice Up exhibition

Emma's doctor/Dracula coat may have let the side down, but not even a Spice Girl gets it right every time.

Sequin slip dress, £95, Topshop. Shop it here.

5. Head-to-toe colour

The Spice Girls at the Royal Gala Show with Prince Charles

Pulling off a monotone colour outfit can be daunting, but both Scary and Baby spice did just that at the Royal Gala Show in 1998. And in oh-so-of-the-minute colours of coral red and baby pink no less. No wonder Prince Charles looks a little hot under the collar.

(The sartorial magic of Geri's ice skater/ cheerleader ensemble naturally requires no explanation.)

Get the Look:

Double breasted blazer (£49) and high-rise trousers (£30), both Topshop. Shop it here.

The Spice Girls' legacy of air-kicking, hair-flicking records (of which they sold a cool 85 million worldwide) is unrivalled, but it was their inclusive, confident approach to fashion that embodied their message of female empowerment, and feels relevant, even today.

So go forth friends, Spice Up Your Wardrobe and make sure you get tickets to the reunion concert when they go on sale on Friday.
