A 20-year-old man has been charged with murder after he allegedly stabbed a 38-year-old man in Victoria's east at the weekend.

Police were called to the intersection of York and MacAlister streets, outside the Criterion Hotel in Sale, about 1am on Sunday.

Officers and passers-by tried to perform first aid on Clinton Allen but he died at the scene.

Acting Inspector Jason Hullick told ABC Gippsland that Mr Allen was walking home from a night out with his wife.

"It's very, very sad," Inspector Hullick said.

"Mr Allen's stepdaughter was due to give birth soon and he was very excited about that, it's a very sad set of circumstances."

Sale man Spencer Shumski was later arrested and charged with murder.

He appeared by video link in the Sale Magistrates Court this morning and was remanded in custody.

His case is next due to mentioned in court in September.
