Speed limit cut on busy Western Avenue in Cardiff

A new speed limit has been introduced on a stretch of busy Cardiff road.

A 30mph zone has been marked on Western Avenue at Gabalfa heading westbound to Llandaff.

The new speed limit replaces the 40mph speed that was previously in place.

Meanwhile road markings show a stretch of the A48 heading eastbound towards Newport being reduced from 70mph to 50mph.

Western Avenue, including the area near Tesco Extra, usually sees heavy traffic at peak times.

Announcing the changes on April 30, Cardiff Council said the changes were made to improve road safety and air quality on one of Cardiff’s busiest roads.

All the new speed limit signs have been installed on Western Avenue (A48) and the new speed limits are live and can be legally enforced by the police.

Under the changes:

The new speed limit restrictions in place along the A48 (Cardiff Council)
  • Drivers travelling eastbound from Gabalfa Roundabout towards Newport can increase their speed from 30 mph up to 50 mph until they reach the Llanedeyrn Roundabout. The speed limit on this stretch of road was previously set at 70 mph. The speed limit to the east of Llanedeyrn Roundabout remains at 50 mph, increasing to 70mph as you approach the A48(M) and the M4.
  • Those travelling westbound from Llanedeyrn Roundabout towards Gabalfa Interchange can travel at 50 mph, until they reach the University Hospital of Wales where the speed limit reduces to 40 mph which remains unchanged. From Gabalfa Roundabout, drivers then enter the 30 mph limit until they reach Ely Roundabout

The change comes after it was announced earlier this year that parts of north west Cardiff will see speed limits cut from 30mph to 20mph as part of a Welsh Government pilot.

The change will affect areas including Whitchurch, Tongwynlais, Llandaff North, Rhiwbina and Heath.

The speed limit in these areas will change in phases from this summer to the end of the year. It could see 20mph becoming the default speed limit in residential areas in April, 2023, in a move to make roads safer for people cycling or walking.

Meanwhile, in west Wales, a number of turn-offs could be closed and new speed restrictions could be enforced on one of the most dangerous stretches of road as part of a bid to make it safer, the Welsh Government has confirmed.

The A40 between Carmarthen and St Clears is currently subject to a transport appraisal guidance (WelTAG) study which is looking at ways to reduce the number of crashes on the road and improve driver safety.

The dual carriageway is used by thousands of motorists as it is the main route connecting Carmarthen with further afield in west Wales including many popular tourism spots in Pembrokeshire.

Between January 1, 2010, and August 31, 2019, there were 359 crashes on the stretch of road. More than a quarter of those resulted in injuries while two people were killed, including a four-year-old girl.
