Spectre Divide is an upcoming first-person shooter that has been announced to be getting a PC Steam version and will get its first major stress test this month.

The game was developed by Mountaintop, which is a studio that is filled with veterans who have experience in a variety of popular games. These titles include Apex Legends, Call of Duty, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Halo, Overwatch, and Valorant.

Spectre Divide's Duality Mechanic

The studio said that Spectre Divide is a competitive tactical first-person shooter that was built around a "Duality" mechanic that promises to "reshape" how players approach strategy.

While an official release date was not announced, the first major stress test is scheduled for Aug. 3, 2024, to Aug. 4, 2024.

In a press release, Mountaintop game director Lee Horn said that their team has been patiently waiting for this day to show how their new game will bring "new life to the genre." He said that the community's support means everything to them, according to Gematsu.

Horn also expressed his gratitude to the playtesters who participated in helping the studio make the game what it is over the last few years.

Spectre Divide features 3v3 matches where players use Duality to control two bodies in real time. This allows you to defend two sites at once, cover your own back, and trade for yourself.

The game is set in a near future city known as Breakwater where "Santai," an unsanctioned competition, has become the pinnacle of achievement and status.

There are no predetermined characters in Spectre Divide and players will create their own pair of competitors to forge their legacy.

A preview season was conducted last week that gave players an early hands-on experience of how Spectre Divide's Duality mechanic works. The game also includes familiar features such as a buy menu, econ rounds, and bomb sites, said PCGamer.

Innovating the First-Person Shooter Genre

However, one major difference that Mountaintop's debut title has over other first-person shooters is that your weapons' bullets will always go to where you are aiming. On the other hand, the Duality mechanic lets players switch bodies anytime they want.

Players also have access to a device that they can throw that will let them move their other body in that particular location. In an overview trailer, Mountaintop explained how the genre-changing mechanic works and what it looks like.

Another thing that stands out with Spectre Divide is its visuals, as cel-shading is generally not seen in first-person games as many people think it is too distracting.

However, Mountaintop was able to make it work and shows a clean world that doesn't overwhelm players, according to IGN.
