Spectators Narrowly Avoid Injury From Flying Tire after Indy 500 Crash

A scary moment thankfully resulted in no injuries during Sunday’s Indianapolis 500 when a tire flew off Kyle Kirkwood’s car and bounced over the protective fence toward the grandstands. The tire missed hitting any spectators and instead landed in a parking lot adjacent to the racetrack.

The tire hit a parked car, but fortunately, no injuries to spectators or drivers were reported.

Kirkwood spoke to reporters shortly after the crash and said he was OK, crediting the safety measures by the car manufacturers with preventing him from injury.

“I haven’t seen the wreck yet, so I can’t really speak for it,” Kirkwood said. “It didn’t feel that big, to be honest, but you know it’s big when you’re upside down and there’s sparks flying into the cockpit from the halo dragging on the floor.”

You can view the amazing in-car video of the crash below.
