If you're looking for a truly magical Northumberland experience this summer, how does opera under the stars in a castle courtyard sound?
A rare opportunity to visit the courtyard of Ford Castle and enjoy its incredible views has arisen, with Opera Brava returning to Ford Castle's courtyard for the second year in a row to stage two performances in June. First is Bizet's Carmen on June 24, generally considered to be the most popular opera there is, followed by Puccini's great tragedy Tosca the evening after - both of which will be performed in English.
The estates, which lie in the valley of the River Till near Berwick, are considered one of north Northumberland's hidden gems, and their 2022 season includes more than just open-air opera. There's free entry into Ford's Victorian schoolhouse, the Lady Waterford Hall, which recently featured on BBC TV show Antiques Road Trip.

The schoolhouse is said to be an artistic masterpiece, with its walls covered in huge Pre-Raphaelite paintings. Also open to free entry this year are the remains of a medieval castle at Etal or a chance to follow the course of historic battle at Flodden Field, where James IV of Scotland became the last British King to die on the battlefield.
Other attractions that have reopened include Hay Horse Farm Heavy Horse Centre, the Heatherslaw Light Railway steam train, and the Heatherslaw Corn Mill. The beautiful surroundings have several waymarked trails and bicycles can be hired to explore the area too.
Regarding the opera, Shannon Denson, visitor services manager at Ford & Etal Estates, said: "We feel very privileged to have Opera Brava perform. They are a world-class international company and we were blown away by the quality of the performances last year. Opera Brava told us that Ford Castle had the best acoustics they had experienced in 30 years, so this is a rare treat not to be missed. We have worked hard to keep ticket prices as low as possible."
Ticketholders are asked to bring their own drinks, chairs and/or rugs. They can also bring a picnic or order one to be delivered, but no food will be sold on the night.
