Attorney General Merrick Garland has provided Congress with special counsel Jack Smith's report on the investigation into Donald Trump and efforts to overturn the 2020 election. The report is expected to be released publicly soon, marking the special counsel's final official word on the January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol and the actions by Trump and his associates.
Smith had brought four charges against Trump in the 2020 election probe, but the case faced setbacks, including a Supreme Court ruling on presidential immunity. The special counsel dropped the case against Trump after voters returned him to the White House in November.
The release of Smith's findings on January 6 came after attempts by the president-elect and his allies to block it. While part of the report will be made public, a portion covering classified documents investigation will not be released. Garland had planned to allow a small group of lawmakers to view this portion behind closed doors, but a court order currently prevents its sharing outside the department.
A hearing on the matter is scheduled for later this week as the clock ticks toward the January 20 inauguration. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.
