Spate of drain cover thefts in Cardiff suburb as council issues warning

A recent spate of drain cover thefts saw 20 stolen in a single Cardiff suburb in just two days. Cardiff council said it will cost thousands to replace the metal grates in Danescourt with expenses for each cover ranging between £250 and £500.

The authority has warned members of the public not to approach any gully thieves in action and has urged any witnesses to contact the police. While drain cover thefts in Cardiff are "sporadic" they are not uncommon with 60 stolren in the last year, the council added.

This latest string of thefts in Danescourt began on March 27. A council spokesman said: “Plans are being put in place to replace the 20 drain covers stolen in Danescourt recently with theft-proof units by the end of next week. The exact cost of replacing each cover varies depending on a number of factors. Costs range between £250 and £500.

“The theft of gullies in the city is generally sporadic but not uncommon unfortunately. Prior to this most recent incident the council replaced more than 60 gully units last year. Anyone witnessing gully thefts should not approach those offending but please report the incident to the police by calling 101 with details of the location, a brief description of the offender, and their vehicle registration number.”
