Spain is facing a shortage of ice due to the high price of energy as Europe enters another heatwave, the third this summer.
Some supermarkets in Spain have been forced to ration the amount of ice at two bags per customer as supply has dropped this year.
This has led to an increase in the price of ice as stockpiles produced earlier in the year begin to run out.
The country may run out of ice before the end of the summer, according to Sergio del Moral of the Tele Hielo distributor in Madrid, who spoke to La Vanguardia newspaper.
“As it has not been possible to stabilise the costs to be able to sell the ice at the usual market price, the factories stopped production and it is now, in summer, when it is being noticed. The forecast is that in August there will be no ice,” he said.
Spain was particularly badly affected by the last heatwave to hit the continent, with wildfires and high temperatures taking hundreds of lives.
A similar period of high temperatures is due to settle over Western Europe from the middle of this week. So, if you’re planning a trip to Spain this summer, be sure to stay cool but don’t be surprised if your drinks come neat.
