Spain said it is satisfied with the “positive results” that have been achieved since it agreed to a “new roadmap” to improve relations with Morocco.

“We can congratulate ourselves because this new step proves to be very positive,” Spain’s government spokeswoman Isabel Rodriguez told Spanish television channel TVE on Monday.

She pointed out that Madrid and Rabat have welcomed the positive results of the new roadmap, which “made possible progress on many bilateral issues of common interest.”

Rodriguez stressed that Spain is committed to moving forward in bolstering ties with Morocco and consolidating a mutually win-win partnership.

“We continue to progress in the roadmap that was established with Morocco to improve the neighborhood relationship, particularly progress on key issues to our countries, such as immigration, economy, and security.”

Morocco and Spain announced the new roadmap following Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez’s visit to Rabat in April at the invitation of King Mohammed VI.

Sanchez said then he agreed with the King on “a clear roadmap that allows the management of matters of interest in a concerted manner, in a spirit of normality and good neighborliness, without room for unilateral acts.”

Relations improved between the two countries after Spain announced in a letter to the King in March its support for Morocco’s autonomy plan “as the most serious, realistic and credible basis for settling the dispute” over the Western Sahara.
