Spain updates Covid-19 rules following surge in cases abroad

Spain will be updating its Covid-19 regulations, as a health official has announced that travellers from China will need either a negative Covid-19 test or proof of vaccination. This comes amid a surge in cases in the country.

As well as Spain's new regulations, health minister Carolina Darias is hoping for similar measures to be put in place across EU countries. Health officials from the 27-member European Union on Thursday promised to continue talks on seeking a common approach - but held back from imposing restrictions.

As reported by the Liverpool Echo, Ms Darias did not specify when the reintroduced regulations will take effect. Similar measures for UK travellers were only recently axed in October in a bid to boost tourism.

Right now, UK travellers will not be impacted by the new regulations unless they are flying via China. In which case, they will need a negative Covid-19 test or proof of vaccination.

Ms Darias said: "There exists a shared concern internationally and nationally over the evolution of cases in China and the difficulty to make a correct evaluation of the Covid-19 situation given the scant information that we have available."

She added that China would be lifting travel restrictions from January 8 and there was likely to be a major increase in people travelling abroad. The health minister said that she was concerned over the emergence of a new variant.

The United States announced new Covid-19 testing requirements on Wednesday for travellers from China. Japan has also started requiring tests for passengers arriving from China.
