Spain poised for snow and hail as polar front predicted to hit holiday hotspots

Tourists heading to Spain for a spring break this weekend will be met by plunging temperatures, wintry showers and even snow. Weather warnings have been issued for several holiday hotspots with strong winds and rough seas also predicted.

Conditions will remain unsettled for many resorts in the run-up to the weekend, including those on the mainland and the Balearic Islands, before the polar front sweeps southwards to bring the unseasonal chill to the region. The Spanish weather agency AEMET has announced a series of weather warnings for popular tourist destinations.

The popular tourist provinces of Malaga, Granada and Almeria are all under a yellow weather warning for strong winds. The Canary Islands have also experienced wet and windy weather with strong gusts up to 70kph.

Scattered wintry showers and hail are also expected to move across resorts like Majorca, Ibiza and Menorca in the Balearics, and the Costa del Sol, Costa Brava and Costa Blanca on the mainland. Snow is forecast on higher ground in the mountains of Majorca.

However, the falling temperatures will be most noticeable for tourists as the cold front approaches. Values will fall from the high teens C to lows of around 6-8C in some places.

Winds will gust from the north-west making it feel much colder with the chill most prevalent on Saturday. And the bad weather will last in next week before it begins to warm up again from Tuesday. British tourists should follow local advice in their holiday destination in the event of extreme weather.

Meanwhile, Spain has now ditched Covid testing and quarantine rules for anyone who has mild symptoms of the virus. People will instead be advised to avoid social contact for seven days and to wear a mask while outside.

Despite the rule change, tourists and residents are still required to wear masks indoors in Spain with regulations reviewed again during the early part of April.
