Spain hailstones: Warning issued after toddler dies after being struck in fierce storm

A toddler has been killed during a fierce hailstone storm in Spain.

Catalonia is a popular region with UK holidaymakers but after experiencing extreme heat over the summer, giant hailstones descended down on the North East of Spain.

The 20-month old girl, who has not been named, was tragically hit by a giant hailstone in the town of La Bisbal d’Empordà in Girona province. She was taken to hospital but passed away on Wednesday morning.

According to the town's mayor, Carme Vall, the hailstones were up to 11 cm wide. Speaking to the national radio station, RAC 1, She said: "The hail fell for only 10 minutes, but it was 10 minutes of terror."

The hailstone storm was so powerful, windows on buildings and cars were damaged, with some shattering completely. Some roofs have been left with puncture holes and rips.

Meanwhile, the Catalan meteorological office, MeteoCat, has warned of more storms in the region as temperatures lower, brining with it unstable conditions and the possibility of more hail.

Pere Aragonès, the Catalan regional president, said his thoughts were with the girl's family and everyone affected by the tragic storms.

In a statement on Twitter he said: “Painfully affected by this tragedy, I want to send my condolences to the family. A very big hug. Our full support for the residents of La Bisbal affected by the hailstorm. The government of Catalonia is on your side.”
