Spain, Greece, Portugal and others update rules for unvaccinated Brits

With coronavirus travel restrictions significantly easing, there are a number of countries British tourists can now visit without having to show proof of vaccination.

Until recently, travellers had to be fully vaccinated to enter Spain without needing to test or quarantine.

But under new measures, anyone who is unvaccinated but has recovered from coronavirus in the past six months can now enter the country.

Anyone from the UK can visit Spain for tourism purposes if you can show valid proof of meeting the vaccination requirements or a medical certificate certifying that you have recovered from covid in the last six months prior to travel.

You can use the UK proof of COVID-19 recovery record or a recovery certificate issued by a relevant health authority or medical service to certify your COVID-19 status.

At least 11 days must have passed since your first positive COVID-19 nucleic acid amplification test - NAAT (PCR or similar) or rapid antigen test.

Here we take a look at some other countries can unvaccinated or partially vaccinated UK tourists visit.

Greece

Unvaccinated travellers can now enter Greece by either:

  • showing a certificate of recovery from Covid-19
  • showing proof of a negative PCR test, undertaken within the 72 hour period before arrival into Greece
  • showing proof of a negative rapid antigen test from an authorised laboratory, undertaken within the 24 hour period before your arrival into Greece

Italy

Anyone who cannot demonstrate full vaccination must fill in a passenger locator form before arriving in Italy.

You must also show either:

  • evidence of a negative PCR taken within 72 hours before entering Italy or a negative rapid lateral flow test taken within the 48 hours before entering Italy
  • a Covid-19 recovery certificate, certifying that you have recovered from COVID-19 in the last 6 months

If you are not vaccinated and cannot provide a negative test result or recovery certificate you will need to quarantine for five days.

Portugal

Unvaccinated tourists will need to show a negative PCR test (taken no more than 72 hours before entry) or rapid lateral flow test (taken no more than 24 hours before entry) when you check in for your flight to mainland Portugal.

If you’ve had Covid-19 in the past year you can enter Portugal without testing, providing you have a recovery certificate.

You can use your UK COVID Pass to demonstrate proof of covid recovery when checking in for your flight.

Turkey

Travellers who are not fully vaccinated can visit Turkey provided they show proof of a negative PCR test (taken no more than 72 hours before entry), rapid antigen test (taken no more than 48 hours before entry), or proof of a recent recovery from Covid-19 within the last six months.

Cyprus

People aged 12 and over wishing to visit Cyprus who have not been vaccinated and do not hold a valid certificate of recovery must do a PCR test within 72 hours of arrival.

Alternatively, you can take a rapid antigen test within 24 hours prior to departure.

You must also undergo a PCR test upon arrival at the airport (in Cyprus).

The cost of the airport test is around €15 - €19.

Test results should be available within three hours through the online platform, and you must self-isolate in your accommodation until the result is available.

If your result is positive, you must remain self-isolated and await instructions from the Ministry of Health.

Iceland

From Friday (February 25), all Covid-19 related travel restrictions for Iceland have now been removed.

Covid rules within the country have also been lifted.

Mexico

Mexico is open to travellers regardless of their vaccination status.

Travellers are required to complete a Health Declaration Form and scan the QR code it generates on arrival.

Norway

The travel-restrictions upon entry into Norway have been lifted.

The same rules as prior to the pandemic now apply, whether you are vaccinated or not.

Lithuania

British nationals travelling to Lithuania from the UK are no longer required to prove their vaccination status, recovery from Covid-19 or have a negative Covid-19 test result on arrival.

Slovenia

Entry requirements for Slovenia are the same for all travellers, regardless of Covid-19 vaccination status.

All travellers arriving in Slovenia must continue to complete the Digital Passenger Locator Form 24 hours before arrival.

Costa Rica

Adults who are not fully-vaccinated can visit Costa Rica as long as they have proof of travel insurance that covers lodging and medical expenses in case of contracting Covid-19.

Anyone aged 18 or under, along with fully-vaccinated adults, can enter Costa Rica without mandatory insurance.

El Salvador

Most travellers can enter El Salvador without proof of vaccination and do not have to quarantine on arrival.
